Charlie's Obsession Killed His Game
Published: 2026-03-27
SHALLOW & BEAST Recap, Survivor 50 Episode 5
TL;DR: The season's first double elimination sends Cila to tribal, and it delivers. Charlie Davis's fixation on Rizo costs him the game in a 4-3 blindside; the closest vote of the season. Rizo, Dee, Cirie, and Kamilla vote correctly. Jonathan and Rick land on the wrong side. On Vatu, Angelina goes home 4-1 and Ozzy crosses the 1500 baseline for the first time. Emily Flippen is now the season's SHALLOW MVP at +46.4. Six active players still have not attended tribal council.
Episode Summary: SurvivorElo Episode 5
Quick refresher: SHALLOW rates strategic positioning (voting correctly + outlasting). BEAST rates challenge performance. Both use Elo, so gains and losses depend on relative ratings. Full methodology at survivorelo.com.
Episode 5: What Happened
Kalo won immunity again. Both Vatu and Cila went to tribal in the season's first double elimination. Angelina was voted out 4-1 on Vatu (she voted Stephenie; everyone else voted Angelina). Charlie was voted out 4-3 on Cila (Cirie, Dee, Kamilla, Rizo voted Charlie; Jonathan, Rick, Charlie voted Rizo).
The Main Event: Cila Finally Goes to Tribal
After four episodes without a tribal council, Cila's first post-swap tribal produced the closest vote of the season (4-3) and the first time more than one player was on the wrong side of the vote.
Last week's recap asked whether the Rizo-Charlie showdown would deliver. It resolved in one tribal.
The Charlie Problem
Charlie Davis was eliminated at his first tribal council, joining Jenna and Q as players voted out without ever casting a correct vote this season. Charlie's S50 SHALLOW record: 0 correct votes, 4 incorrect votes, eliminated. The model saw him play once. He dropped 22.6 points.
| Player | Entering | Current | Change | Vote Record | Tribals |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Charlie | 1552 (B) | 1530 (B) | -22.6 | 0W-4L | 1 |
This resolves the Rizo-Charlie comparison from last week, where I noted their nearly identical SHALLOW entering ratings (Rizo 1570, Charlie 1552) but divergent BEAST profiles. Rizo attended his first tribal and voted correctly. Charlie attended his first tribal and went home. Their ratings diverge permanently:
| Entering SHALLOW | Current SHALLOW | Entering BEAST | Current BEAST | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rizo | 1570 (B) | 1574 (B) | 1376 (F) | 1381 (F) |
| Charlie | 1552 (B) | 1530 (B) | 1556 (A) | 1561 (A) |
The model cannot see the narrative. It does not know that Charlie's fixation on Rizo led him to leak information that Rizo used to organize the counter-vote. It sees only the outcome: Rizo positioned himself on the right side, and Charlie did not.
Rizo, Dee, Cirie, and Kamilla: The Correct Four
All four players who voted for Charlie gained SHALLOW points. The range is notable:
| Player | Ep5 Change | Season Total | Vote Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cirie | +13.5 | +19.3 | 5W-0L |
| Kamilla | +4.3 | +4.3 | 3W-0L |
| Rizo | +4.1 | +4.1 | 3W-0L |
| Dee | +3.8 | +3.8 | 3W-0L |
Cirie gains the least per matchup because she is the highest-rated player in the game (the Elo tax on being #1), but the most overall because she already had data from Episodes 1-2. She is now at 1705, a new season high and the highest SHALLOW rating of any active player.
Kamilla, Rizo, and Dee all attended tribal for the first time this season. All three voted correctly. The model's first impression of each is positive, but it is a single data point. One correct vote does not tell you much about sustained strategic ability.
Jonathan and Rick: Wrong Side
Jonathan Young and Rick Devens both voted for Rizo and landed on the wrong side.
| Player | Ep5 Change | Season Total | Vote Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jonathan | +3.6 | +3.6 | 0W-4L |
| Rick | -5.4 | +3.8 | 2W-4L |
Jonathan's first tribal of the season produced 4 vote losses. The outlast bonus (surviving the tribal) partially offsets the vote damage, leaving him net positive (+3.6) for the episode. The model sees a player who survived but was entirely outside the strategic loop.
Rick's result is worse in context. He carried a perfect pre-swap record (2W-0L) and a +18.2 season gain into Episode 5. One wrong vote nearly wiped all of it out. He is now at +3.8 for the season. His Edge of Extinction history shows a player who found himself on the wrong side of votes more often than not. This is a step back toward that pattern.
Vatu: The Expected Boot
Angelina's elimination was a formality. After Mike White went home last week she was isolated. The vote was 4-1, Angelina the lone dissenter.
| Player | Ep5 Change | Season Total | Vote Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ozzy | +14.0 | +34.9 | 5W-3L |
| Stephenie | +11.9 | +27.6 | 4W-5L |
| Emily | +10.8 | +46.4 | 8W-0L |
| Christian | +10.5 | +44.9 | 8W-0L |
| Angelina | -24.8 | -31.6 | 2W-7L |
Ozzy Crosses 1500
A quiet milestone. Ozzy entered the season at 1467, the lowest SHALLOW rating in the cast. His vote record across South Pacific and Game Changers was poor enough that the model rated him below every other returnee. Five episodes later he is at 1502. He has crossed the 1500 baseline for the first time, climbing from D-tier to C-tier.
After his wrong vote in Episode 4 (the Mike White blindside), this was a bounce-back: correct vote, outlasted Angelina. Two consecutive correct votes after a miss. The question from last week ("was Episode 4 a stumble or the old pattern reasserting itself?") gets a provisional answer: stumble, for now.
Emily: The Quiet MVP
Emily Flippen's +46.4 is the largest SHALLOW gain of any player this season. She has attended every tribal council her tribe has faced, voted correctly every time (8W-0L), and climbed from B-tier (1553) to A-tier (1600). Christian is right behind at +44.9 and 8W-0L. Emily edges him because her lower entering rating amplifies each win.
The model cannot tell you who is driving the votes. Emily and Christian look identical in the data. But eight consecutive correct votes across five episodes is not luck. The model sees two players who have navigated every tribal this season without a single misstep.
Season-to-Date: SHALLOW Rankings
The full picture after Episode 5. Seven players eliminated or medevac'd. Six active players have never attended tribal council.
Active players who have attended tribal:
| Player | Tribe | Vote Record | Entering | Current | Season Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cirie | Cila | 5W-0L | 1686 (S) | 1705 (S) | +19.3 |
| Christian | Vatu | 8W-0L | 1565 (B) | 1610 (A) | +44.9 |
| Dee | Cila | 3W-0L | 1598 (A) | 1601 (A) | +3.8 |
| Emily | Vatu | 8W-0L | 1553 (B) | 1600 (A) | +46.4 |
| Jonathan | Cila | 0W-4L | 1579 (B) | 1582 (B) | +3.6 |
| Joe | Kalo | 2W-0L | 1568 (B) | 1581 (B) | +12.8 |
| Rizo | Cila | 3W-0L | 1570 (B) | 1574 (B) | +4.1 |
| Stephenie | Vatu | 4W-5L | 1542 (B) | 1569 (B) | +27.6 |
| Kamilla | Cila | 3W-0L | 1556 (B) | 1560 (B) | +4.3 |
| Rick | Cila | 2W-4L | 1538 (B) | 1542 (B) | +3.8 |
| Ozzy | Vatu | 5W-3L | 1467 (D) | 1502 (C) | +34.9 |
Active players with no tribal data (ratings frozen):
| Player | Tribe | Entering/Current | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coach | Kalo | 1618 | A |
| Colby | Kalo | 1554 | B |
| Genevieve | Kalo | 1553 | B |
| Aubry | Kalo | 1535 | B |
| Chrissy | Kalo | 1529 | B |
| Tiffany | Kalo | 1512 | C |
All six untested players are on Kalo, which has won immunity every episode. With Kalo at seven members (including Joe, who last attended tribal on original Cila in Episode 2) and the other tribes at four (Vatu) and six (Cila), a merge or swap seems imminent. It will finally force these players into SHALLOW's view.
Eliminated players:
| Player | Vote Record | Entering | Final | Season Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savannah | 1W-6L | 1592 (A) | 1544 (B) | -47.9 |
| Angelina | 2W-7L | 1536 (B) | 1505 (C) | -31.6 |
| Mike | 2W-3L | 1588 (B) | 1556 (B) | -31.4 |
| Jenna | 0W-7L | 1552 (B) | 1523 (C) | -29.5 |
| Q | 0W-5L | 1527 (B) | 1503 (C) | -23.8 |
| Charlie | 0W-4L | 1552 (B) | 1530 (B) | -22.6 |
| Kyle | — | 1625 (A) | 1625 (A) | +0.0 |
Quick Hits
Stephenie's recovery continues. She went 0W-5L at the Episode 3 Q tribal and looked like the next target. Since then, 4 consecutive correct votes, +27.6 for the season. She has climbed from 1542 to 1569. The model sees a player who survived being on the wrong side, adapted, and found the right alliance.
The season's first real strategic split. Through four episodes every vote was near-unanimous: 7-1, 6-1, 5-1, 3-2-1, 4-1. The Charlie boot at 4-3 is the first time the wrong side had enough votes to theoretically win. This matters for the model because close votes generate more balanced matchups. Instead of 1 player absorbing all the vote losses, the damage spreads across 3 (Jonathan, Rick, Charlie), and the correct voters face more opponents.
Six untested players remain. Emily, Christian, and Ozzy have attended tribal 5 times each. Cirie and Rick have been to 3. Dee, Jonathan, Rizo, and Kamilla got their first tribal this episode. Coach, Colby, Genevieve, Aubry, Chrissy, and Tiffany have still not been to tribal once. The model has data on 11 active players and nothing on 6.
BEAST Update
Kalo won immunity again, extending their unbeaten streak to five episodes.
| Player | Entering BEAST | Current BEAST | Season Change | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coach | 1475 | 1513 | +38.0 | B |
| Tiffany | 1422 | 1451 | +28.7 | C |
| Aubry | 1453 | 1467 | +14.5 | C |
| Genevieve | 1475 | 1485 | +9.4 | C |
| Kamilla | 1520 | 1528 | +8.6 | B |
| ... | ... | ... | ... | ... |
| Emily | 1490 | 1456 | -34.0 | C |
| Christian | 1493 | 1458 | -34.6 | C |
| Ozzy | 1614 | 1556 | -58.3 | A |
The Ozzy-Coach inversion is nearly complete. At the premiere Ozzy was S-tier BEAST (1614) and Coach was C-tier (1475), a 139-point gap. Five episodes later: Ozzy 1556, Coach 1513. The gap has shrunk to 43 points. Ozzy has dropped 58 BEAST points; Coach has gained 38. If Kalo keeps winning and Vatu keeps losing, Coach will overtake Ozzy in challenge Elo.
Vatu is a BEAST wasteland. Their four remaining players: Ozzy (1556), Christian (1458), Emily (1456), Stephenie (1397). One A-tier player and three who are C-tier or below. If they lose one more immunity challenge, someone from this group goes home. The model says they are heavy favorites to lose.
Compare: Emily vs. Cirie
These two are the /compare defaults this week.
| SHALLOW | Tier | BEAST | Tier | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cirie | 1705 | S | 1370 | F |
| Emily | 1600 | A | 1456 | C |
Cirie has the higher rating. Emily has the better season. Emily's +46.4 is the largest SHALLOW gain of any player; Cirie's +19.3 is modest because her S-tier rating means each win is worth less. Emily has attended 5 tribals with an 8-0 vote record. Cirie has attended 3 with a 5-0 record. The question going forward: can Emily sustain this pace, or will the variance of Survivor catch up? Cirie's career proves that even the best strategic player in history eventually hits a wrong vote. Emily has not. Yet.
