SHALLOW & BEAST Episode 1 Recap

Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans

TL;DR: Jenna was right to target Cirie. She is the #1 strategic threat and #24 in challenges. But Jenna could not get the numbers. Ozzy had the best strategic episode, voting correctly and gaining the most SHALLOW points of anyone. Cila's challenge studs (Savannah, Joe, Rick, Ozzy) took a beating in BEAST after losing immunity. Coach had the strongest challenge showing, winning the captain challenge against Ozzy and Q to lead all BEAST gainers.

A few weeks ago I shared SHALLOW, an Elo rating system for strategic positioning in Survivor, and a follow-up companion system, BEAST, for challenge performance. I am going to try doing episode recaps this season showing how the model reacts to each week's events.

Quick refresher: SHALLOW (Survivor Hierarchical Algorithm for Logistic Likelihood & Odds Weighting) rates strategic play. You gain points for voting correctly (Outwit) and outlasting eliminated players (Outlast). BEAST (Binary Elo Algorithm for Survivor Trials) rates challenge performance. Both use Elo methodology, so gains and losses depend on the relative ratings of your opponents. All players start at 1500; returning players carry their ratings across seasons.

Entering Ratings

Season 50 is an all-returnee cast, so every player walks in with an existing rating. The cast entered as follows, sorted by SHALLOW:

Player Tribe SHALLOW Tier BEAST Tier
Cirie Fields Cila 1683 S 1366 F
Kyle Fraser Vatu 1625 A 1569 A
Coach Kalo 1618 A 1475 C
Jonathan Young Kalo 1595 A 1527 B
Savannah Louie Cila 1588 A 1633 S
Dee Valladares Kalo 1586 A 1578 A
Jenna Lewis Cila 1582 B 1416 D
Mike White Kalo 1580 B 1476 C
Charlie Davis Kalo 1567 B 1556 A
Joe Hunter Cila 1564 B 1616 S
Stephenie LaGrossa Vatu 1563 B 1419 D
Christian Hubicki Cila 1561 B 1493 C
Rizo Velovic Vatu 1558 B 1376 F
Colby Donaldson Vatu 1554 B 1546 A
Genevieve Mushaluk Vatu 1553 B 1475 C
Emily Flippen Cila 1549 B 1490 C
Q Burdette Vatu 1547 B 1473 C
Kamilla Karthigesu Kalo 1543 B 1520 B
Aubry Bracco Vatu 1535 B 1453 C
Rick Devens Cila 1534 B 1611 S
Chrissy Hofbeck Kalo 1529 B 1594 A
Angelina Keeley Vatu 1528 B 1417 D
Tiffany Ervin Kalo 1512 C 1422 D
Ozzy Lusth Cila 1462 D 1614 S

The cast is heavily concentrated in B-tier for SHALLOW; 17 of 24 players enter between 1512 and 1582. At the extremes, Cirie sits alone in S-tier at 1683, a full 58 points above the next closest (Kyle at 1625). Ozzy enters at 1462 in D-tier, the lowest SHALLOW rating in the cast. This is the model's memory of South Pacific and Game Changers, where he was consistently on the wrong side of the vote.

BEAST tells the opposite story for some players. Ozzy enters at 1614 (S-tier) despite his D-tier strategy rating. Cirie enters at 1366 (F-tier), the lowest BEAST rating in the cast, despite her S-tier strategy rating. Savannah, Joe, and Rick Devens round out the S-tier challenge threats.

Episode 1: SHALLOW (Strategic) Snapshot

Only Cila went to tribal council, so only 8 players have rating changes. Jenna voted for Cirie; everyone else voted for Jenna. She was eliminated 7-1. Kyle was medevac'd without a tribal, so his rating is unchanged.

Rank Player Tribe Tribals Vote W Vote L +Outlast -Outlast Start End Change
1 Ozzy Cila 1 1 0 1 0 1462 1472 +10.7
2 Rick Devens Cila 1 1 0 1 0 1534 1543 +9.1
3 Emily Cila 1 1 0 1 0 1549 1558 +8.8
4 Christian Cila 1 1 0 1 0 1561 1569 +8.5
5 Joe Hunter Cila 1 1 0 1 0 1564 1572 +8.4
6 Savannah Cila 1 1 0 1 0 1588 1596 +7.9
7 Cirie Cila 1 1 0 1 0 1683 1689 +5.7
8-23 Kalo & Vatu 0 0 0 0 0 +0.0
24 Jenna Lewis Cila 1 0 7 0 7 1582 1523 -59.1

Ozzy gains the most. The lower your rating relative to your opponents, the more you gain from a win. Ozzy entered as the lowest-rated player in the cast at 1462. Voting correctly and outlasting Jenna (who entered at 1582, 120 points above him) gave him a proportionally larger boost. Cirie gains the least (+5.7) because she was already the highest-rated player on the tribe. The same outcome is worth less when you are expected to succeed.

Jenna drops 59 points, falling from B-tier (1582) to C-tier (1523). She lost 7 vote matchups (every correct voter is matched against her) and 7 outlast matchups. A near-unanimous vote against players with comparable or lower ratings produces this kind of steep decline.

Kyle's medevac has zero model impact. SHALLOW only generates matchups at tribal councils. Since Kyle never attended tribal, the model has nothing to process. He retains his A-tier 1625 entering rating, but since he is out of the game, that number is now frozen.

16 players have no data yet. Kalo and Vatu won immunity, so the model has not seen them play. Their entering ratings remain unchanged. That changes the moment they attend tribal.

Episode 1: BEAST (Challenge) Snapshot

The premiere had three challenges: a marooning reward challenge (all tribes), a supply captain challenge (Ozzy vs. Coach vs. Q), and a combined immunity/reward challenge (all tribes). All team challenges use a lower K-factor (K=4 vs. K=16 for individual challenges); movements are smaller but still meaningful.

Cirie Cila 1366 1373 +7.6 2

Joe Hunter Cila 1616 1607 -8.2 2
Rick Devens Cila 1611 1603 -8.0 2
Savannah Cila 1633 1623 -9.2 2
Ozzy Cila 1614 1602 -12.3 3

Coach gains the most (+15.3). He competed in all three challenges, including winning the supply captain challenge against Ozzy and Q. His low entering BEAST rating (1475) means he had more to gain from wins, particularly the captain challenge, which was effectively a 1v1v1 individual matchup. He beat Ozzy (1614) head-to-head; a massive upset by the numbers.

Ozzy drops the most in BEAST (-12.3). He competed in 3 challenges (both tribal + the captain challenge) and lost all three. Being S-tier entering (1614) means each loss costs more. He drops to 1602 and is now the 4th-highest BEAST player in the cast, below Savannah, Joe, and Rick Devens. He gained +10.7 in SHALLOW from voting correctly, so the two systems are moving in opposite directions for him.

Was Jenna right? She targeted Cirie, and the model would agree with the logic. Cirie enters Season 50 as the #1 SHALLOW player in the cast (1683, S-tier) and the #1 BEAST liability (1366, F-tier); the ultimate strategic threat who is also a pre-merge challenge liability. The model cannot tell you whether it is the right time to make that move. Jenna went home 7-1.

SHALLOW and BEAST tell opposite stories for Cila. In SHALLOW, Cila's correct voters gained because they voted well at tribal. In BEAST, Cila's challenge threats (Savannah -9.2, Joe -8.2, Rick -8.0, Ozzy -12.3) are the biggest losers because Cila lost immunity. The tribe that went to tribal is the tribe that lost the challenge; the two systems measure different failures. Meanwhile, each tribe split their challenges (Cila won the marooning but lost immunity, Kalo and Vatu the reverse), so players without extreme ratings mostly wash out. Charlie (-0.3) and Christian (-0.5) were on opposite sides of both results but ended up in nearly the same place.
